India is the second largest producer of tea in the world after China. Assam is the largest producer of tea with over 51 % of the production and over 53 % of area under tea cultivation in India.

Assam tea, most of which is grown at or near sea level, is known for its body, briskness, malty flavour, and strong, bright colour. It is manufactured specifically from the plant Camellia sinensis var. assamica. Each year, the tea estates of Assam collectively yield approximately 1,500 million pounds of tea.

Assam tea is generally harvested twice, in a “first flush” and a “second flush.”
THE FIRST FLUSH - is picked during late March.
THE SECOND FLUSH – is harvested in Assam normally between mid-May and June.

This second flush, tippy tea (golden tips), is sweeter, stronger and more full-bodied and is generally considered superior to the first flush tea.

Assam boasts of several enchanting old world tea bungalows with beautifully manicured lawns set amidst lush and tranquil tea estates. Several of the tea estates provide stay at the Bungalows, to enable tourists re-live the British era…

The prominant Tea Bunglows are the Chang Bungalows in Dibrugarh; Kaziranga Golf Resort, Mistry Sahib’s Bungalow, Banyan Grove and Thengal Manor in Jorhat and the Wild Mahseer in Sonitpur.

The tea gardens are located amidst Assam's rich culture and Heritage which can be witnessed along with the tea tours.
